Anna Carven-Destroyer

Anna Carven writes great scifi. She also writes great romance. And just to top it off, she writes great scifi romance. Her Dark Planet Warriors series is one of my favorite series in the scifi romance genre and one I go back to time and again. I originally read them all on KU, but I now own them all. That series is done, but she’s going to have a spinoff of the series, called Dark Planet Mercenaries, I think, or something along those lines. However, Destroyer is not part of any of those series. It is the start of a whole, brand new series. And OMFG. Yeah. It’s that good and more.

So, Calexa and her crew are human, or at least mostly so. She has a couple of Primean/human hybrids as part of her crew. She is still mostly human, at least she thinks so. She’s had as many augmentations as she can, and so has the majority of her crew. It has made it easier for them to stay alive as smugglers and mercenaries. On this particular run, she and her crew are taking the Primean S and her humans to a refuge planet. However, some slavers have a different idea. They are going to make it hard for Calexa to get to where she needs to be. Instead, she and her crew jump blindly and end up in a completely different part of the universe from where they started, and some place that no one knows.

Ares is a Vradhu. He and his people are purple aliens with tails that have venomous barbs. They avoid technology as much as possible, and are pretty much at the hunter/gatherer level. He and his war pack are out trying to find the source of whatever is poisoning their water. When they find the source, it turns out that it’s their people’s enemy, the Naaga. They are a created slave race who aren’t very nice. They were poisoning the water to try to get some Vradhu to take them up to a huge spaceship that orbits their world. The Naaga want the Vradhu to kill the Corrupted that have taken over the ship. What they don’t expect is what happens when Ares walks on to the ship. It decides that it really likes Ares.

When Cal’s ship gets pulled in by the huge alien ship, strange and fascinating things start to happen.

Ares is pretty much a total badass, and the changes he goes through are just totally suprising. And the fact that he’s able to fight everything that he does and keep doing what he’s doing is pretty awesome.

I love Cal. She’s a BAMF, which I love. I love having a strong female MC. I like it when they still stay strong even after the romance starts. Part of this is why I read more female authors than male authors. They tend to keep the women strong no matter what. Anna is really good at doing that. I’ve loved every single one of her heroines

Seriously, the book left me breathless in places. I stayed up way too late finishing it and debated going back to read it again. I cannot wait for the rest of the series to come out. I just want Anna Carven to write faster so that it comes out tomorrow. Sadly, if she does that, then there aren’t any new DPW books. It’s a tossup. Anyway, the book isn’t heavy on the sex, but it is heavy on the chemistry. It’s also very into violence and cussing. The ending was like whoa! I didn’t expect what happened to happen. I was pleasantly and happily shocked by it.

I don’t have any spoilers because I really don’t want to spoil anything at all. But here’s a pretty picture which makes me think of this book.
