She doesn’t know anything about my violent past. But if I could just touch her, taste her, then maybe I could pretend her perfect world could be mine, too.
I know I should stay away, but when she looks to me for protection, her fate is sealed.
Ashlyn will be mine.

I met Marco once, before the night he took me. He’d been dark and unquestionably dangerous, and alluring in a way I didn’t allow myself to contemplate. I’d clung to Joseph, looking to my first love to protect me from his intimidating best friend.
Then Joseph left me, alone and broken; vulnerable to enemies I hadn’t known threatened me from the shadows.
But it wasn’t his enemies I should have feared, since his best friend is the monster who abducted me. And when I wake up, taken and trapped, the man I love is by the monster’s side.
Joseph says he can’t let me go. Marco says he won’t let me go.
I’m theirs.

Bry Ann-Axel

Axel is a suspense story from Bry Ann. She’s a new to me author and this was a book she asked me to read.

When Axel was a teenager, he had a best friend named Sarah. She was the love of his life and he was hers. One day he walked around the corner and found her just after she had been raped. Axel, who already had serious anger issues, beat the shit out of the guy who did it, nearly killing him. Axel walked Sarah home, called his dad to help him, and then found out that Sarah killed herself. He spent the next several months in juvie while his dad spent the time trying to get the rapist convicted. The second he turns 18, he is out of his small town.

Two years after that, we meet Aly. She’s just turned 18 and is on her way to the big town of Seattle. She’s lived under her overly religious parents’ thumbs for years, and she’s ready to break free and find out who Aly is. Neither her parents, nor her best friend Brandon want her to leave. They are positive that she’s going to get to the big city and literally turn into a slut immediately. She has to smack her father to get out to go to the train station, where she runs into Axel, who is now going by X.

OK, normally this is where I would separate out for spoilers, but I really don’t have anything to say, spoiler-ish-wise. So, I’ll just keep talking about the things I would generally say, and then put in a picture. Overall, I thought that the story was pretty good. I was entertained, and isn’t that the whole point of reading a book? To gain some entertainment from reading it? My one real problem with it is that I felt like the story was just a little too convoluted sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, I like convolutions in my stories, and a good twist is always interesting. However, I think that there was maybe one too many twists in Axel. I think that if one of the twists or convolutions were left out, it would’ve been a tighter story, and thus, more enjoyable. Of course, remember that’s all my opinion, and opinions are like assholes, everybody has one. I did like the story, even with all the convolutions, so there’s always that. So, go check it out and tell me what you think. Meanwhile, happy reading!

May Archer-The Right Way

May Archer has bestowed the third book in her The Way Home series upon us. It is truly a gift. The romance is stressful and beautiful and oh so very real. I personally identified with The Right Way in a lot of ways, the biggest of which I’ll get into later.

So, Bas is Cam’s older brother, and an obsessive computer genius. He is a coder and will focus on code until he gets it to work the right way. He’s also a very logical person. He tries to logic his way out of everything, even the things where your head just won’t work the right way. He doesn’t quite get social situations, and he doesn’t quite get other people. There is one person in his life who he has always been able to count on and who has already been able to break through to him. That’s Drew.

Right now, Bas is obsessed with trying to figure out how to take down the Russians who killed his parents and who are trying to take down his company. He spends hours and days working on plans to get rid of them, and he gets seriously obsessed. However, this time Drew isn’t around to pull him out of himself, because they have stopped talking.

Drew and Bas have been best friends for 30 years. Bas was engaged to Drew’s sister, Drew dated Bas’s brother Cam. Drew has always been the person who helps Bas interact with the world and figure out what people are thinking and how he should handle it.  They spend time just hanging out, are always at one another’s houses and just are together most of the time. Drew has also always been madly in love with Bas for most of his life, even when his heart was breaking because Bas was going to marry his sister. Drew knows that nothing is going to happen because Bas is straight. But that doesn’t stop him from loving Bas. Everything ticks over mostly well, until a fateful Halloween night.

Bas tells Drew that he needs to cut loose so he takes him to a Halloween party with their old friends. Drew gets hammered, and when friends ask if Bas would rather kiss Drew or lose Drew forever, Bas says he’d rather kiss Drew and goes for it. In his drunken state, Drew lets a lot of things out of his personal vault, including how much he loves Bas. Bas freaks out, and they don’t talk for a month, and they are both miserable.

OK, here’s where I get up close and personal about why I identify so strongly with Bas. He talks to Cort, Cam’s lover, who is bisexual, about his feelings for Drew and how he doesn’t understand them because he’s straight. He likes having sex with women. Cort tells him that everyone’s truth is different, everyone’s likes are different, and we all grow and change and evolve in our lives. Sexuality isn’t an either/or choice. It’s a scale, and you can fall in various places on that scale. I am bi. I spent years pretending I wasn’t. I told everyone I was straight. I grew up in a religion where having same-sex attraction was bad, so therefore I had to be straight. As I grew up and started giving less of a fuck what other people thought about me, I was able to start facing my truth. For a long time, the only person who knew was my husband, although our son probably knew. A couple of years ago I came out to my mom and am slowly coming out to the world in general. Heh, outing myself more here, aren’t I? Anyway, why does this make me identify so strongly with Bas? It’s because I understand having those feelings and how having those feelings can change your whole view of yourself. It’s kind of like standing on teeter-totter, you have to maintain perfect balance or you are going to fall, but everything is wobbly underneath you, so trying to find that balance is nearly impossible.

OK, this is where we are going to split and go our different ways. This story is the very best one of the entire series. Drew and Bas are my favorite couple in the series and are in my top 10 book couples. The struggles they go through are so real and raw and that makes the story so much better for me, not that the story isn’t perfect anyway. I really want to see more of this world, and see how it is going to expand now that the 3 foundational couples are all paired off. I want to get Gary’s backstory, because I know it’s going to be fascinating.

Oh, and this picture isn’t spoiling anything, I just liked the guys. They are cute, right?

156215345

OK, first of all, I want to know if Gary is Russian or of Russian descent and what his connection to Ilya Stornavich is. Ilya kept calling him by a nickname, and it’s obvious that Gary cares for Ilya’s nephew Dmitri. So, May, I can haz backstory, please? I would also love to see a story about Peter and his boyfriend.

I’m glad to see an end to the Russians and how that story arc finished. I don’t know where the next ones would pick up, but I would love to see it in some way, even if it is just novellas where we get peeks into the lives of Cam and Cort, Cain and Damon, and Drew and Bas. I love getting those little glimpses into a day in the life of…

I wouldn’t mind learning more about Ilya too. He might be some sort of twisted Russian Robin Hood, but there is a good story there, I know it. How did he get to Boston from Siberia and the gulags? That’s not your typical journey, and I would possibly sell my son to get that story. (Depends on how much he’s annoyed me at any given point in time)

OK, that’s all I have to say today, so I’m going to hit publish. This week has a lot of releases and lots of blog posts, so look forward to that. Meanwhile, happy reading!

Sahalie Blue and Sterling Scott-Cowgirl Thrill Rider

When I looked at the title of Cowgirl Thrill Rider, I wasn’t 100% sure what I was getting myself in for. I could guess from the title that there was a cowgirl and that it was going be some kind of romance, and knowing the authors, I knew it was going to involve sex and spanking, but outside that, I had no clue.

So, CTR is all about Polly. We follow her and her exploits from 1916 to 1948. The story is episodic in nature. That means that we just peek in at various times of Polly’s life and see what she is doing. Some of the episodes are longer than others, and some seem like they are all one time period because they take place in the same basic setting, but if you check the time stamps, you’ll see that really they are months or more apart. I really liked this because the story does cover 30 years. Having 30 straight years would be boring and unwieldy, and nowhere near as enjoyable as CTR is. So, very well done there.

In 1916, little Polly is 14 and getting ready to ride in her first bronco busting event. She’s been riding since she could walk. Her dad is supportive of it, her mom isn’t. Her mom wants her to be a lady, and riding horses and bustin’ broncs is not all that particularly ladylike, even in Nebraska. But that doesn’t stop Polly. She goes out there and gets on the horse and wins. And boom, her life is set at that very point.

Years later, Polly has joined a big Wild West show. She’s 18 now, she has kept up her riding and rodeoing, and she is now off to show off how well she can ride. This is what she wants to do and she’s good at it. She knows that there are risks, but she’s never let that start her.

When she gets to the show, she rooms with Lulu, who is Annie Oakley’s niece and a sharpshooter herself. Polly gets to try all kinds of things, like learning trick riding from some “Cossacks”. She also meets Buck. She and Buck get close, especially after he spanks her. That pretty much sets the tone of their relationship. After a while of touring, they make it back to Nebraska, where Buck and Polly are both from, meet parents, and get married.

OK, This is where I’m going to go my way and you can choose yours. I read in the back of the book where Polly was created from the profiles of a lot of women. I think it really shows through. I fell in absolute love with Polly. I think that she is pretty kick ass. I also like that the story is more about Polly’s story than it is about Polly and Buck’s story. I mean, yes, that is an important part of the story and it would be wrong to diminish it in any way, but it’s not the most important part of the story. The important part of the story is Polly and her courage in getting up and being the cowgirl that she wanted to be and to do all the riding she wanted. That’s just awesome, IMO. Polly really is the hero of her own story. This is a truly awesome story on a lot of levels, so even if you aren’t sure about whether or not you’ll like western romances, you should go check it out.

cowgirl-horse-cowboy-attractive-53142

There is a lot of spanking in this, and I think that in most cases it’s perfectly justified. However, there is one spanking that I thought was completely unjustified, and if I was Polly, Buck would’ve had to sleep with one eye open that night. She had a justifiable reason for her feelings and for what she did, and Buck didn’t even try to talk to her about it or about why she felt that way. In fact, he owed her an apology, if you ask me. Just because he’s the head of the household doesn’t mean he’s perfect and doesn’t make mistakes, and I think that this was on. When you get to the point in the story, you’ll see what I mean, and I’m eager to see what you think of it and if you agree with me about it.

I think that’s the only spoiler-y thing I have to say, and I’ve said everything I wanted to say. It’s a good story, a lot of fun, and one I’m glad to have read.

I’m looking forward to a weekend where my nose rarely comes out of my Kindle and lots of good posts for next week, so be looking for that. Meanwhile, happy reading!

CASSIE
I’m determined to leave my mistakes in the past.
These days I’m back in school, I’m surrounded by my wonderful, crazy family and I’m working for my dad.
Then Curtis Mulligan happens.
A supposedly reformed gang member from the rundown prison town where my folks grew up, Curtis looks like he was built for mayhem.
We have nothing in common.
If he hadn’t taken a job working for my father, our paths wouldn’t even cross.
But I can’t admit that menacing mix of ink and muscle has flipped a switch inside of me.
It’s an impulse I’m determined to ignore.
However, when Curtis turns out to be much more than he seems and steps between me and a bad situation, I wind up owing him a hell of a favor.
And I can’t think of anything but paying him back…

CURTIS
I should have been dead a dozen times over but somehow I’m still here.
I’m grateful for the chance to keep my head down and act like a regular citizen. Screwing up isn’t an option and getting naked with the boss’s daughter is no way to thank the man for a job.
Besides, sweet, clueless Cassie Gentry isn’t the kind of girl I’m used to entertaining myself with. I had planned to keep my hands off even if she begged for it.
But that was before I realized Cassie is much more than a pretty face.
She just might be the girl who can turn me around for good…

*TURN is the latest book set in the Gentry world from USA Today and NYT Bestselling author Cora Brent. May be read as a stand alone.*

The Beast
had Belle.

Killian
Black has me.
How I got
here doesn’t matter, even though he says it does. Says it was my choice. He
doesn’t get it, though. It wasn’t ever a choice for me.
And now, he’s changing the rules.
The agreement was one month. For thirty days, I’d be his. He’s no longer satisfied
with my body alone, though. He wants my soul, too. Wants every part of me. And
even though I can pretend I’m safe when I lie beneath him, this man does
something to me. Something wicked.
A thing
that will break me.
Killian
People suck at consequences.
Cilla made the choice. She offered the deal. I just took her up on it. So what if I
changed the rules half-way in? I’m not apologizing for it.
See, Cilla and me, we’re the same. She’s dark. As dark as me. Something happened to her. Something bad. It damaged her.
But it’s not a hero she seeks. It’s an avenging angel. A dark knight. That, I can do.
I’ll slay her dragons, but it’ll cost her, because in return, I want
everything. And I’ll take it.
She’s mine.

note: Captive Beauty is a standalone romance. Think Beauty and the Beast, but
twisted and dark in the best, dirtiest ways.

Excerpt
Prologue 1
Cilla
He’s watching me.
I know he is. He has cameras everywhere. Why wouldn’t he have one here? In
this, the “special” room? He told me he likes to keep an eye on his things. And
that’s what I am. A thing. A possession.
His.
Fucking his.
And today I
fucked up.
Today he’ll take
it out of my skin.
I shudder with
the thought. With the knowledge of what I know is coming.
I’ll fight him. I
wonder if he expects me to. Wants me to, even. All I know is I can’t submit to
him. I can’t let him break me.
But I am
breaking. Little by little.
I wonder if
that’s why he took me.
This is a game to
him. My life is a game.
I hug my knees to
myself. This room is so cold, unlike the others.
I pull the
blanket up around me, as much for the cold as for protection. It’s not like I
can hide my fear. He knows. He knows the real truth. Knows everything now.
My dress is torn
and I’m barefoot. He took my shoes away when he put me here. I guess the heels
could be used as a weapon. As if I could somehow manage to overpower him.
I try to swallow
but the lump in my throat makes it impossible. I’m scared and I hate it. I
don’t want to admit it. Not even to myself.
Tears wet my eyes
but before they have a chance to fall, I cover them with my hands and rub them
away. I don’t want him to see my weakness. He gets off on it.
I did this. I
pushed him. And I can survive this. I fucking have to.
It’s when I’m
giving myself that ridiculous pep talk that I hear his footfalls in the
hallway. Hear his voice, muffled so I can’t make out what he says. Probably
dismissing Hugo, his fucking henchman. Like he needs one.
Every hair on my
body stands on end when he slides the key into the lock. When he turns it. And
when he pushes the door open, it takes all I have not to crumple. Not to cave.
It takes all I
have to stand and ready myself for battle against this beast of a man.
Prologue 2
Kill
She claims I took
her, but that’s not the whole truth.
I gave her a
choice. She made it.
Someone needed to
be punished. It didn’t need to be her. She chose this. Chose to be here.
Well, okay, not
right here. Not like this. Standing against the far wall, her pretty, jade eyes
wide with fear, the delicate skin around them pink from tears.
She’s scared.
And she should
be.
She knows what’s
coming.
I warned her and
she fucked up.
I take her in,
pretty in pink. Pretty Priscilla. Even with her hair a mess. Her mascara a
black smear across her face. Her dress ruined. She’s scared shitless, but she’s
defiant. I like that about her. Like her fire.
It makes my dick
hard.
I close the door
but don’t bother locking it. No need. She’s not walking out of here tonight.
I’ll be carrying her when I’m through.
When I take a
step, she makes a sound, something like a frightened little rabbit would make
if they could make sound. Her hands are flat against the wall behind her. It’s
like she’s trying to melt into it.
“I guess we were
always going to end up here,” I say.
She has no
response apart from the sudden trembling of her body. She wraps her arms around
herself. I can even hear her teeth chatter. She’s too proud to beg though. Beg
me for mercy. I respect her for that. But I do like the idea of her on her
knees at my feet, clinging to me, pleading with me to spare her this one
thing.
I slide off my
suit jacket and hang it over the back of the chair. I watch her reflection in
the mirror as I take off one cuff link, then the other, and set them both on
the table. I’m rolling up my sleeves when I return my attention to her. Her
eyes slide to my forearms. My hands.
“I know, Cilla,”
I say.
She looks up at
me.
“I know
everything.”
