Anthology-Twisted Sacrament

These stories are dark, dark, dark, dark, and even darker than that. There are no happy anythings here, there’s no light. There’s nothing that will bring you any kind of hope. I’d say abandon all hope, but even just abandoning it isn’t enough. You have to completely scour any kind of hope from your soul. You have to erase the word hope from your memory. Then you might, just possibly might, be ready to read Twisted Sacrament. Consider yourself warned.

The anthology consists of 7 authors who write dark anyway, but then they got let off the leash. Not only that, they were given the brief of writing the most sacrilegious and blasphemous story possible. And let me tell you, SJ Cole, Zoe Blake, Addison Cain, Jennifer Bene, Celia Aaron, Ashleigh Giannoccaro, and Alta Hensley fucking delivered. These 7 stories are depraved, twisted, desolate, full of mindfucks, horrifying, and darker than fuck. They are disturbing. And yet. And yet, I couldn’t stop reading them. I couldn’t get enough of them. I loved everyone one of them, even the ones that left me shaking at the end. (I’m looking right at you, Jennifer.)

They are all short stories, none of them much longer than 30 minutes to read. I wouldn’t recommend reading them at night before bed though. You might not sleep well. But because they are short, you’re only going to get my reactions, as is my usual practice in this situation. I got ARCs for 4 of them, but like I said, they are short, so I had no problems reading the rest of them.

Addison Cain-She Came Before God

There is a period of Catholic and Italian history where the high ranking clergy weren’t as… celibate as they should’ve been. During that time, Rodrigo Borgia became Pope. There are all kinds of rumors about orgies in the Papal palace while he was there, and it is historical fact that he had children, born when he was a cardinal. You know, when he wasn’t supposed to be dicking around. Lucrezia Borgia, who you may have heard about as a poisoner, was one of his children. So, what does this have to do with Addison’s story? Well, her story involves a pope and some fucking.

Addison’s story really just was straight up horrifying. Our poor little heroine learns that she’s part of a horrible family tradition, and everything that she thought was true isn’t. This story stuck with me. I mean, I dreamt about it. Even days later, I’m still trying to get a total handle on certain things. I really wanted to scream at the end of it, and maybe sit and cry in despair.

Zoe Blake-Lilith’s Revenge

Lilith comes out of Jewish mythology. She’s generally considered to be Adam’s first wife, but when she wouldn’t behave the way that they wanted, she was kicked out of Eden and Eve came in in her place. Lilith then went on to become the mother of demons. In her demon partying and fucking days, she fucked everyone she wanted to, including some angels.

In Zoe’s story, she is back in her demon party girl aspect, tempting a priest. Now, here’s the thing. She and her priest get it on in all kinds of ways and do all kinds of depraved things, but… The question is, is what they are doing real, or is the priestly part real, or is anything real? Zoe has written an incredibly mindfuck and my mind is still fucked from it. I don’t know what’s real and what isn’t and what was going on in the story. I have theories as to what’s going on, but they vary from minute to minute.

I recommend following Zoe’s instructions when it comes to her story.

Alta Hensley-Last Rites

I personally think that the end of the world is going to be some kind of plague. In this jet-setting world, it’s going to be too easy for something to be across the world before anyone gets diagnosed with it in the first place. Why do I mention this? Because Alta destroys the world with The Itch, an illness that makes people want to scratch their skin off, makes their blood foam, and makes them pretty fucking crazy. There are rumors of a safe place for women to go (and only women), where they won’t be exposed to The Itch.

This is so disturbing. It’s short, it’s brutal, and it’s dark as fuck. I kind of wanted to take a very, very hot shower after reading this one. And maybe scrub for about 30 hours.

Jennifer Bene-Baptism in Eden

If you look at my GR/Zon review, it says “Oh my fucking god. That is all.” Yeah, that’s about all I could say about this one on there. Jennifer writes dark at the best of times, but let her off the leash, she’s simply dazzling. And dazzle she does.

You may think of Eden as paradise, but Jennifer’s Eden is as far away from paradise as you can possibly get. It’s so dark and so twisted. I know I’m saying that a lot, but there aren’t words in the English language to describe it. But the fact remains that this story is Stygian. It’s also a very Jennifer Bene story. If I were given all the stories in this book and asked to pick out which one Jennifer had written, this would be the one that I choose. When I was done reading it, I was literally sitting on the couch and shaking. I had to go read something else to calm down. I may be traumatized.

Celia Aaron-Communion

I know that I’ve raved about Celia on here before. She totally deserves every good thing I have ever said about her.

I loved this story. It wasn’t quite as dark as some of the others, but it’s by no means light. I love the byplay between Cate and Ted. It is very interesting to see how Ted talks to her and what goes on. I feel like this is very topical too. I have to wonder how much Celia was influenced by what’s going on in the world right now, because it really feels like there was some serious influencing going on. Frankly, I think it makes it better.

Ashleigh Giannoccaro-Say Yes

I’ve only read one other Ashleigh Giannoccaro book, but I own a couple of more. My TBR is totes ridic and one day I’ll get to them.

Ashleigh takes us for a tour through a cult. A very, very creepy cult. A very creepy cult that says men have to have 2 wives or they can’t get into Heaven. OK, I grew up Mormon, and there has always been the whole polygamy thing surrounding the church, and then the FLDS church around, which are a polygamous cult, so this one felt really close to home, if you know what I mean. I don’t know how much Ashleigh took from there, how much came from other cults, and how much came straight out of her head, but it was a fascinating read. It also looks like it’s setting up for a new series, so I’ll be all over that one.

SJ Cole-I’m Better Than You

SJ Cole is Stevie J. Cole writing under a new name. And OMG, her heroine is totally cuckoo for coco puffs. I mean, the cheese not only done slipped her cracker, it left the room, the house, the zip code, the state, and the country. Then it changed its name, cut its hair, and got plastic surgery. The cheese wants to have absolutely nothing to do with Violet anymore, and I don’t blame it. I wouldn’t want to have anything to do with her either. I can totally get why she’s upset, but damn, girl takes it to another level. She’s creepy as fuck. She’s crazy as fuck. SJ says there’s more to the story, and I’m going to have to read it. Can’t fucking wait. I like creepy and crazy.

OK, there are my reactions to each of these 7 stories. I loved this book. But, trust me, don’t look for light. Don’t look for happy. Don’t look for hope. Don’t look for this book to last long. I recommend you go buy it soon if anything I talked about sounded good, because anthologies don’t tend to last very long and then the rights revert back to the authors.

No spoilers, but a picture I thought was great for this.

Just Breathe

This anthology is more than a collection of excellent stories by excellent authors, it’s also a way to support To Write Love on Her Arms. I’ve talked about them before. They are an organization that helps support people who are dealing with self-harm and suicidal ideations, among other things. This is such a great organization. Even if you only want one or two of the stories in Just Breathe, you should definitely buy it to support TWLOHA.

Before I get further into my review, I want to warn people that the stories in this book all deal with mental illnesses of some shape or form. There are things in these stories which may trigger you. Please be aware of that and read responsibly.

All of the stories are pretty short, so if you only have a moment here or there to read, you should have no problem finding one that will fit. Because they are short, you are going to basically get my reaction to each story. For most of them, if I were to put anything about them in the review, it would totally spoil the story. So, here we go.

Missy Ann-Forbidden Sorrows-Grief

Missy Ann was a new author to me, and I’ll be looking up more of her work. Grief is hard to deal with at the best of times, and is highly individual. In most cases, you and your grief can be acknowledged, but what happens when it can’t be? It’s not anything I’ve ever thought of before, and wow, Missy brought it to life so vividly.

Anna Edwards-Grounded-Anxiety

I deal with an anxiety disorder and Anna’s story rang so true for me. It was very much like what can go through my head when I feel out of control. It was a great story. And, it looks like it’s the start of a new series, when Anna gets the rights back to it. I can’t wait to see it.

Michelle Brown-Little Lies-Self-Harm

Michelle is still a pretty new writer, but damn, the girl has some serious chops. Self-harm is a very, very touchy subject and has to be handled just right. If you go too far one way, you end up sensationalizing it, if you go too far the other way, you end up making it not believable. Michelle walked that line perfectly. Not so much that it’s glorified, but just at the point where you can understand why Lindsey does what she does. Self-harm was the very reason that TWLOHA was created, so I felt like this one was so important.

K.S. Marshall-Wreckage-Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder

PMDD is PMS with roid rage. As the hormones in a woman’s body ramp up for ovulation and menstruation, they can have an effect on the woman even at the best of times. But brain and body chemistry being what it is, sometimes the best of times isn’t what happens. K.S. Marshall explored that really, really well. You are inside her heroine’s head as these changes are happening to her and she can’t figure out what’s going on. It’s kind of chilling, but in a good way.

Livia Grant-Purged-Eating Disorder

If you’ve read any of the Black Light books, you’ve probably run across Khloe and Ryder before. It’s no secret in their book that Khloe, a big time movie star, has a history with an eating disorder. What Livia’s story shows so well is that dealing with something like an eating disorder is that it isn’t as easy as one day being cured. There are always going to be things that can trigger you and it’s something you are always going to have to be diligent at fighting, and sometimes that fight is really, really hard.

Yolanda Olson-Sickness in the Sunrise-Erotomania

Erotomania generally happens to women, and it’s when they believe that someone who is of a higher status than they are is in love with them. For example, Yolanda’s story. Yolanda is one of my favorite authors when I want dark, creepy, and chilling, as well as beautiful. Her characters are always so real to me. Just like you can reach out and touch them. That’s no different when it comes to this one. You can feel what’s going on in Dice’s head and why her thoughts make perfect sense.

Natalie Bennett-Ashes to Ashes-Depression

Honestly, I don’t even know what to say with this one. It got deep inside me and moved me. I had to take a break and read something completely different after reading this one. It was so… Yeah.

Dani Rene-Tattered Pieces-Abuse

The one thing we always ask when we talk about people who are in domestic violence situations is why did they stay? Why didn’t they leave the first time, the fifth time, the twentieth time? The thing is, the question isn’t that simple, and the answer is nowhere even near that simple. I could probably write a thousand words on that alone, and it wouldn’t even come near answering anything. And I wouldn’t have gotten it anywhere near as good as what Dani said. I hope that this is the start of a series, because it looks like it could be. I want more of Toni’s story. I’m rooting for her.

Jennifer Bene-Cocoon-Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Jennifer managed to write a story that is very true to her storytelling while still exploring OCD. People who have OCD have rituals that they have to follow or their world ends, and that’s not really an exaggeration. That’s the way it will feel, at the very least. Amy was an interesting character and Colton was tortured in so many ways. Such an excellent story and a viewpoint of OCD that most people won’t ever see.

Ally Vance-Ignite-Pyromania

Fire can be very pretty. But, for most of us, pretty is as far as it gets. For people who are pyromaniacs, it’s like their lifeblood. Ally showed that really well. I’ll never look at wooden matches the same way again. Nor, I think, will I ever look at a bonfire the same way.

Murphy Wallace-Hostile Takeover-Split Personality

Murphy Wallace is another new to me author. And another one I’ll be tracking down more of. This was really intriguing to me. I’m not sure how to describe it or even to talk about how it made me feel. I really enjoyed it though.

Jane Anthony-The Row-Addiction

Addiction is a serious illness. Too many people want to see it as some kind of moral failure or something, but that’s not the way it works. Jane’s Trinity fights with addiction, and when you see her backstory, you see why. I thought that Jane did so well. Trinity and King made me cry.

Ashleigh Giannoccaro-Awake-Insomnia

When I was reading Ashleigh’s story, it was both kind of creepy and engrossing. I mean, yeah. I’m hoping any of her insomniacs stay right away from me, please and thank you.

Skye Callahan-Unbearable-Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

When you go through a traumatic incident, there are changes that are made to your brain’s chemistry and your body. Those changes can trigger PTSD. And there’s no way of telling who is going to have it and who isn’t. Two people who went through the exact same event may not both have PTSD, and if they do, they might not be triggered in the same way. Skye handled the subject really well, and explained it in ways that many people don’t necessarily hear.

Toni Lemay-Loops-Mandela Effect

The Mandela Effect is something that was totally new to me. Basically, it has to do with alternate realities and the way that your brain makes memories. That’s probably a way too simplistic description, but it’s what I got from in when I looked it up. If I had more time to research it, I would probably be able to come up with something more, but I tend to fall down the rabbit hole when I start researching things. I will probably be looking into this more when I have a chance because Toni made it sound really interesting, and I want to see how it works.

I want to applaud all these authors for writing about these mental illnesses. I don’t know how many of these talented people deal with the subjects they wrote about, but they handled all of them really well. People who are mentally ill aren’t always handled well in fiction, let alone real life, and the stigma that surrounds mental illnesses makes it hard for those of us who are mentally ill to get the help that they need. We are made to feel bad because our brain don’t work the same way that other people’s brains do, and are shamed because we have to take medication to get through our days. I’m very open about the fact that I’m mentally ill and that I take medication to help me be stable. My thought is that if I’m open about it, maybe that fact can help one person get the help that they need. Also, the more we talk about it, the less the stigma is going to be there.

OK, that’s all I have to say today. You really need to get this.

And because I hate to post anything without a picture, here’s a fogbow.

Daddy’s Demands Pt. 2

So, here we are with part 2 of the fabulous anthology Daddy’s Demands. If you missed part 1, you can go back and read it here.

Here are some more of my favorites from this series. Remember, there are 25 stories in this anthology, and I recommend that you go grab it as soon as possible because I know that it won’t be for sale for forever, and these are just some of my favorites. There wasn’t one of these stories that I didn’t enjoy, which is just fantastic.

Katherine Deane-Tri-ing for Daddy

Marnie was an Olympian level runner, until she got into an accident. Jake is the first responder who helped her right after the accident and helped her even more a few years later.

OK, let me tell you why this is one of my favorite ones, and there may be some spoilarage in this, so if you want to miss any chance of spoiling, just skip down. My baby brother was born with spina bifida and used a wheelchair. What does that have to do with this story? Well, Marnie ends up going to the Paralympics and because of my brother, I had the chance to meet Paralympians, which was pretty damn awesome if you ask me. There aren’t a whole lot of romance stories that have main characters who have disabilities. I can only come up with 2 books, and if I were to look harder, I could probably come up with more, but I would have to really look. On the other hand, I can come up with dozens of just about any other kind of main character or storyline you may want. You know how people say representation matters? Well, it really does, so to this cane using woman who had a baby brother who was a wheelchair user, showing an athlete who was able to get to the Olympics after her injury, Marnie was really important. Major, major props to Katherine Deane for that. I mean, totally major props. I want to give her a gold star.

Amelia Smarts-Finding Her Place

Kayla is a college student who is just coming out of a long-term relationship and thinks that she is unlovable. She’s stuck in summer school and wants to find a job. That’s where Hudson comes in. He has a whole lot of baby birds which need fed, and he hires her to be his exotic bird feeder. You know, there are all kinds of ways that could’ve gone, right? Kayla is pretty awesome and tries to be so sneaky. Her interrogation of Charlie was hilarious. I liked this one a lot because of how Hudson helps Kayla figure out what’s going on with what she wants. Very interesting.

Lee Savino-Dueling Daddies

Evangeline is getting drunk and swearing off men. Of course, she’s doing that in front of Shane and Bear, two incredibly hot guys. When she tells them that no man has ever gotten her off, they decide to place a bet with her. They will each get 3 dates with her and see if they can get her off. It’s a sort of menage, sort of not. It’s in the same world as Lee’s Her Marine Daddy, which has a truly hot scene with a chain, and Bear is mentioned in that book. I think my favorite scene in this one happens at the wedding, and I just wanted to cheer.

Alta Hensley-Monsters of Mercy

Esme was going to rat out a very bad guy named Oz. Oz wasn’t all that happy with that idea, so he had Esme abducted and brought out to a manor where she could pay her penance. Knox is one of the Monsters of Mercy who lives and works at the manor, helping people pay their penance. I like capture dubcon fantasies and this one is definitely in this category. It is pretty filthy and we all know that I love good filthy filth. There may or may not be highlights in this story on my Kindle. Probably even Knox couldn’t get me to tell you.

OK, that’s all for this one. There are a whole bunch of great stories by a whole bunch of great authors in this book. It’s a steal to buy because, really, 25 stories? Yeah. The rights won’t stay with the publisher forever, and once they revert back to the authors, the book will be pulled, so you have to get it when you can. Go grab it, and remember, you need to do what Daddy says!

Anthology-Daddy’s Demands Pt. 1

So yeah, I’ve been putting this one off, but not because I didn’t like the book, because I did and I do, but more because life is stupid and adulting is hard. The fact that adulting is hard sometimes made this the perfect set of stories for right now, because it’s 25 stories about Daddies who want to make sure that their little girls are taken care of and aren’t going to have to adult too hard. Of course, some of the Daddies are a little darker than others, or a little more strict, but considering who wrote some of these stories, are you surprised? I’m really not.

There are a lot of great things about an anthology like Daddy’s Demands. One of them is that no matter what kind of mood I’m in, there’s a story there for it. Which is nice, because I never know what kind of mood I’m going to be in from day to day. Plus, with the fact that there are 25 stories, they are pretty short, so if you have a minute to read a story and you don’t want to get dragged into something, you can find a quick story. So, if you are like me and you hate going to bed with an unfinished book, an anthology is a godsend. There’s also the fact that when you get an anthology, you get the chance to read authors that you aren’t familiar with, which is even nicer. Even with as much as I read, and as many of those authors I have read, there were still a couple of authors I wasn’t familiar with.

Of course, then you have the downside to large anthologies like this, at least for bloggers and reviewers like me. There are TWENTY-FIVE stories in here. Do you know what trying to review 25 stories is like? I would get bored writing a blog post that summarized 25 stories. You would get bored reading it. My goal is to not bore my readers. I like you guys, I want to keep you around. I liked all the stories because all the authors are talented, but you know that there are always going to be some that you like more than others. That’s just the way that it is. So, what you’re going to get is a 2 part post, today and tomorrow. That way I can talk about my favorites and not burn you out or burn me out, and Daddy will be happy. 🙂

Renee Rose-Mafia Daddy

Renee’s story ties in with some of her other stories. You get Yuri from The Russian and the tie in from King of Diamonds. Jenna, the heroine of this one was supposed to marry Nico Tacone from KoD, and when her father’s right hand man comes to take her home, Yuri steps in to try to stop him. So, we now have definite proof that they are all part of the same universe. This is a sweet story. I know, I know, you don’t think that Renee can write sweet, but she did. I really enjoyed it, including the connections to her other stories.

Loki Renard-Daddy’s Little Captive

You know how I said some of the Daddies were a little darker and stricter than others? Yeah, Loki’s Dominic is one of them. He comes into the little restaurant where Marina works as a server on a regular basis, and when he comes in late one night and everyone else leaves, Marina just can’t. Lots of kinkery fuckery going on, including one of Loki’s trademarks, a cage. This one is under the bed though.

Jane Henry-Professor Daddy

This one ties in with Jane’s NYC Doms and Verge. Giada is a student who is getting ready to take a creative writing course from a prof that she thinks is going to be stodgy. Only Geoffry Slade is anything but stodgy. So she decides to poke the bear. I’ve been talking off and on with other Daddy authors about brats, and I’m pretty sure that Giada totally counts as a brat. I really liked her and how she thinks it’s fun to poke the bear, knowing what she’s going to get.

OK, there’ll be more tomorrow, but it’s late, and my life is still stupid, so I’m going to go to bed.

Anthology-Ladder 54

So, you want some really hot firefighters that are also seriously Domly types? Yeah, me too. I’m always ready for hot, Domly firefighters. Well, Maren Smith, Raisa Greywood, Adaline Raine, Isabella Laase, and Felicity Brandon certainly are too. In fact, they are so ready for them, that they decided that they would share the boys of Ladder 54 with us.

Here’s the setup for the story. In the little town of Big Banks, Montana, there is an exclusive BDSM club called the Crystal Cabin Club. The Cabin is run by Walt and Sophie. Walt also happens to be the fire chief of the little fire department of Big Banks. But he’s just been diagnosed with cancer, and the insurance won’t cover all the bills, especially things like transportation, hotel bills, because the hospital isn’t in Big Banks, and other such things. So to handle that, Sophie organized a fundraiser at the CCC. They are doing several things. One is that they are going to have a $200/head dinner. Then there are the auctions. One is a silent auction for things like a fancy Camaro, kinky photo shoots, and other nifty things. The other auction is for 5 Doms who are all part of the fire department. The lucky winner gets to have 24 hours with the Dom of her choice. And so here we go.

Maren Smith-The Dance Card

Rylee has been a member of the CCC for a while, but she’s also a wallflower, she’s never scened, but she will sit in the dark corners and watch what’s going on. When she finds out about the auction, she knows that there is one person that she really, really wants to bid on, Walker. And she’s willing to do just about anything to get him. Just ask Tammi Lou. Although, Walker isn’t unhappy that Tammi Lou isn’t the one who won him. No one likes her very much. But at the end of the auction, instead of talking to Walker, she rushes out and doesn’t answer his calls or texts. You see, Rylee is painfully shy and awkward, plus she feels really guilty about what she did to Tammi Lou.

I felt sorry for Rylee, well, maybe not sorry, but definitely sympathetic, because I’ve been the person who had a hard time talking to someone I liked, and I’ve been on Walker’s side of the equation too. It’s hard on both people. I like Walker, and I think he’ll be so good for her.

Raisa Greywood-Light Me Up

Selene isn’t a resident of Big Banks. She is a resident of Chicago, and grew up in Greektown. She had a crush on an older boy named Theo. A year ago, their mothers set them up for a date, only he decided to not go, but everyone else knew that before she did. Now, she has to go to a client meeting in Big Banks and she knows that Theo is a firefighter there. When she gets there, she finds out about the auction, so she decides to go, after Sophie invites her. Selene’s plan is to win Theo, show him what he missed, and then leave. She doesn’t need him at all. And oh yeah, she wants the tricked out 1968 Chevy Camaro too. If she wins that one, she’s planning on taking that one with her. Theo, she’s perfectly happy to leave in Big Banks, sucking her exhaust.

Theo sees a beautiful goddess with the tattoo of a Greek goddess, and he is thrilled when he finally sees her bid on him and win. It’s only when he hears Sophie announce Selene’s name as the winner that he is like oh shit. And then he turns into crazy overbearing Greek man.

I LOVE Selene. Raisa is really writing some great heroines lately. Theo needs a good, swift kick in the butt. Or two, or maybe even 3. But, I’m pretty sure that Selene could handle that, if necessary.

Adaline Raine-Rekindled

Troy is one of our firefighters and was more than happy to help out Walt and Sophie. Then he finds out that the woman who won him is Dakota, his ex-wife. Or, his legally separated wife. She ran out on him years ago, and now, she’s apparently back in town. Yay? There is so much history there that they are going to have to figure out and that could get in there way, but he’s more than happy to spank her since she did win him, and all.

I love a good second chance story, and this is a good one. There is so much in between them, and neither one of them are perfect or blameless. They went through some stuff that’s hard on marriages at the best of times, and I’m pretty sure they didn’t have the best of times.

Isabella Laase-Firehouse 54

Declan has seen 3 of his firefighter brothers go down, and he’ll be damned if he’s going to be number 4. In fact, he is planning on doing the bare minimum when it comes to his “date”. A couple of meals, a couple swats over the clothes, and he’s off to his fishing cabin. In fact, he’s so not into it that he didn’t even meet the woman who won him or look in her file. He just shows up at the Cabin, expecting to have a couple of free hours to look at the file, but then he sees the camper that his date is driving already there.

What Declan doesn’t know is that he doesn’t have A date. He has TWO dates. Claire and Claudia are identical twins. They’ve pulled the old switcharoo more than once in their lives, because no one can tell them apart, and so Claudia figures that they can do it for this too. They will just split the time and no one will be the wiser. But of course, we know that it never works out that way.

I really didn’t like Claudia. I don’t think that she ever really listens to anyone but Claudia. She will definitely need a good Dom to keep her in line. Claire and Declan are pretty sweet together though.

Felicity Brandon-A Hero For Lauren

Lauren is over from England, specifically for this auction. That’s because she has a thing for firefighters. Or rather, for one firefighter. When she was younger, Blake saved her from a fire, before her family moved to England. She’s crushed on him ever since, and now that she took the chance and won him in an auction, she’s finally going to get the chance to actually play with the man that she’s been dreaming and fantasizing about for years. Only she keeps getting phone calls that stress her out while they are supposed to be enjoying themselves.

That’s some serious crush that Lauren has. Not that I blame her. I mean, firefighter. But still, she went to some extremes to get to the auction and to win her dream date. Blake is very sweet to her though. I liked him a lot.

Well, there we go. Five fabulously fiery fapping reads about five fierce firefighters. Go check them out and pick your fave. Happy reading!

Jennifer Bene-Deviant Attraction

Jennifer Bene has a new release out. While it may look like a brand new book, and it sort of is, Deviant Attraction is actually a box set of 3 of Jennifer’s shorts, The Rite, Reunited, and The Invitation. There are also shorts or extended endings that go with each of the stories, so you are getting a whole lot packed into one book. Plus, have you looked at the awesome cover? I am loving it.

I read all 3 of these stories back when I first discovered Jennifer Bene, and I loved them all so very, very much. And I’m really happy to see them out in a new release so that they can get a little bit of love. I’m just going to write a little bit about each one, because they are shorter, and you know how I hate to spoil anything for anyone. I try really hard not to. I mean, if you want spoilers, feel free to message me anywhere, and I will give you all the spoilers you want, but I won’t on here. (Spoiler, Han shot first.) So, in the order in which the stories appear, let’s talk about Jennifer’s stories.

The Invitation

Cara’s roommate Meredith has always had pretty things sent to their house, so when Meredith asks Cara if she wants to make some big money that night, Cara says yes, and then goes to a party with her, to stand around, look pretty, and flirt. Only, Cara meets Saif and Grant and her party turns into something different. And so do invitations that she gets later.

This was a super hot story, and I loved everything that happened in it. Who doesn’t want to get an invitation to their fantasies? Sign me up, please. You don’t even have to give me $1500, not that I would complain.

Reunited

Megan is back to go to her 10 year high school reunion, after trying to put her life together after a disastrous marriage. But her sister, who was pushy and knew how to push Megan’s buttons, pretty much dared her to go. Then she sees Eric, who she dated in high school. They played fun games together too. Then Colby shows up, who was a player. And they decide that they need to play games together.

I need to be honest here. I have never been to any of my high school reunions. I don’t ever see myself going to any of my high school reunions, but if I had gone to high school with Colby and Eric, I would definitely have considered going. Especially if it would have included visiting the shop room to play some grown-up games. I’m all about grown-up games.

The Rite

Heather is a member of a bitchy witchy family. She hasn’t come into her powers yet. In order to do that, she has to perform a special rite with a man. Her cousin talks her into speed dating so that she can find the perfect guy for the ritual. But first, she has to stop and visit her friend, Rick. At speed dating, she meets Neil, and things seem to be on track.

Of all the stories in this set, this is the darkest. But, for a Jennifer Bene story, it’s really not all that dark. But, it is the perfect amount of dark for this story. And I loved it. I didn’t see where things were going on this one, but I adored how it went.

If you haven’t read any Jennifer Bene yet, and if not, why haven’t you, then this is a good way for you to get started. You will get a pretty good look at what she writes and what her stories are like. There are no spoilers, but here’s a picture of a pretty flogger. Go check this one out. Happy reading!

Anthology-N.E.R.D.

Wait, hang on, let me switch out of 80’s movie mode. OK, N.E.R.D., that’s what I meant. N.E.R.D. Naughty, Erotic, Romantic Doms is an anthology with 8 hot, sexy, funny, spanking stories by 7 authors. Golden Angel gets a double bite at the apple. The stories are all pretty short and the entire book is a super quick read. That means that you are going to only get my reactions to the stories, because I don’t want to spoil anything. Trust me, you don’t want me to spoil anything either.

Felicity Brandon-Zoe’s Impetus

Poor Zoe, she’s going to fail botany, but her professor decides to offer her a hand. I tell you what, if I had a professor like Neil, then I would probably have passed some of my maths classes. LOL. I would definitely think about switching my major to botany. Definitely seems to work as a good focusing method.

Jack Crosby-Of Demons and Nerds

I’ve never read a story that Jack Crosby has solo written. I’ve read a couple that he co-wrote with Jaye Elise, and they were pretty awesome, so I was really excited to read his story. Remember how I said that the stories in this book were funny? This was pretty much the funniest story. It’s very tongue-in-cheek and self-referential. I’m definitely going to be tracking down more of his stories.

Katie Douglas-The Doctor’s Companion

This is Katie’s second entry on the blog today. Hi Katie! And I think this story is my favorite story. I love long multi-colored scarves, know what celery is good for, love Jelly Babies, think fezzes are cool, and love crotchety Scottish men. In short, I am a Whovian, so I may be predisposed to like this story, but it’s all very spoofy, in the very, very best way. I have to say, if a man with a flying police box, whether it’s red or blue, comes up to me and asks me to come with him, I’m forgetting the ice cream altogether.

Rue Raven-Walking Disaster

Rue Raven is another new one to me. I’ll be tracking down more of her work, because I really enjoyed this story. I can relate to Grace. There are often disasters around me too, and I’ve done things like give myself a concussion by walking into a glass wall, and pulling my shoulder washing my hair. Yup. Graceful to a fault, that’s totally me. I totally think good structure and ADHD medicine would help Grace a lot, as well as Jake’s spankings. And I hope Gina chokes on her fake tits.

Golden Angel-Alien Online

This is Golden’s first entry in the book. You know how they say you never know who’s on the other side of the computer screen when you’re talking to them? Well, sometimes you really don’t know who’s on the other side of the screen. Let’s just say, I’m up for this kind of probing.

Sassa Daniels-Elise in Wonderland

Yeah, not everyone is into video games and comic books, and there are a lot of purists out there who are disconcerted by seeing how something they love has been changed to suit pop culture. Not that I’ve ever sat and nit-picked a movie for costuming or sword fights or anything. No really, I haven’t. And I don’t have any co-workers who are going to take me to task for it either. Although, I think Elise should’ve gotten a little pass, because the guy was asking for it.

Morganna Williams-The Mugged and the Restless

Clueless boss and focused assistant is a pretty common trope. However, Morganna kind of flips it around and turns it into something a little different. Personally, I really like Morganna’s version better than I like some of the others I’ve seen. And I think pocket protectors are completely overrated. I get why people wear them, they have a use, but still, who wants them?

Golden Angel-Cosplay Connection

Hi, my name is Clara and I went to cons when I was younger. I cosplayed back before they called it cosplay. Yeah, I’m talking OMG, 25+ years ago. Fuck, I’m old. There are no pictures of it anymore, but I used to dress up like Death from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. I rocked it. And I totally rocked the cloak I wore. Damn, I miss those days. Of course, the cons I went to weren’t all that big, and I don’t think one of them exists anymore. I don’t remember any of the cons I ever went to having speed dating, but I suppose it could’ve happened. I did have a con hookup that turned into a long-term relationship. It wasn’t as good as this one though. I would definitely have preferred Diana’s hookup.

OK, that’s what you’re getting from me about N.E.R.D. Go check the book out! Fun, quick, easy, sexy reads. Perfect for that 20 minute break.
